Thursday July 22, 2010

we usually camp over the 4th of july.  we packed up so much stuff and take off for a free mountain site with no running water, lots of dirt & even more mosquitoes.

its fun - it really is : )

we've gone almost every year we've been married.  3 times really pregnant - right before sailor, ben & regan were born.

we like to camp. rex likes fun gadgets & camp equipment. i like s'mores & wildflowers in some plastic water bottle on our camp table.

but whose kidding who to think that its a vacation : )

camping is a crazy amount of work!  even with the games of phase 10 & a book to read & nights at the campfire.

somehow this year my camping desire went as far as the jumbo marshmallows perfect for smores i saw at the grocery.

we started kicking around the idea of a 'real' vacation. disneyland ... hotel ...

beach!

and then the thinking went like this -

hotel & the beach vs. tent & dirt

: ) we've told ourselves we'll still plan a camp trip later this summer.

really family vacations aren't really vacations - regardless of whether you go to bed smokey in a tent or have fresh towels and hours of iron chef america.

but they make for great trips!

we had our moments where we thought 'why in the world didn't we just go camping!' & we also had the 'i'm so glad we're here!' moments.

sailor only threw up the first night.
we didn't burn jack ... that badly.
ben was never reporting as a missing child.
we never counted molly's meltdowns.
regan forgave us for not giving her any sort of regular nap.

we realized the last time we were there was our honeymoon .... and coming back almost 9 years & 5 kids later we had no idea how good we had it then ; )

waiting for the trolley.

waiting for mom : )

no seat belts was a novelty.

rex saw some commercial about people wearing patriotic things that should really only be on flag poles : ) so here he is ... with the girls patriotic bows : ) he was so festive

but not nearly as flag pole-ish as this!!

down from our hotel they had a carnival street fair with all sorts of free things for the kids -

benny went with a shark -

the man told him to open the 'sharks mouth'

he liked it : )

somehow this was more of the scope i was going for when i asked the guy in the neon vest if he'd take our picture ....

he thought zoomed in was better, i guess.

this was a festive as the 4th got. one of the reasons of not going camping was to actually be able to watch real fireworks.  we heard there was a show in the next town ... nope.  they called them 'safe & sane' ie sparklers in a parking lot.  ahhhhh - we decided to not wait around and drove back tossing animal crackers to the back seats laughing.

and then took silly pictures in our own parking spot -

The Lord Jesus did not have a watch, or a calendar, or a schedule book, and yet, when He came to the end of His life He said to His Father, “I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do (John 17:4, ESV). He never seemed rushed, or in a hurry, or fretted about not having enough time, and yet, He was always on time according to His Father’s will. He lived without all the electronic gadgetry we have for keeping in touch with others, and yet He talked with, ate with, and was in touch with all those the Father appointed for Him to encounter. We are in danger of being swept along like debris in a flooded river by the swift current of our culture so that we miss the best our loving Father has for us. If we will enjoy His promised rest in this overly busy and distracting society, then we must learn from Him in quietness and aloneness at His feet. This is how the Lord Jesus lived. His lifestyle is our prescription— if we will become like Him. His Life within us is our strength—if we will walk as He walked—in childlike faith, with implicit obedience and by simple abiding. The Lord Jesus tells us it is possible. - adisciplesnotebook.com
