To .... Ten Things & a Blonde Boy -

 Jack-boy - circa 2007
Age 2
With all sorts of baby chub.

Since we're on a birthday roll ....
Roll you say?
I know, right.
Not really a roll.

Jack is 10.
Double digit ten.
Little boy ten.
Big kid ten.

Rex scored this haul of nerf guns on CraigsList back before Christmas that doubled as a sweet gift for all the boys plus a birthday for Jack.

It was a foggy January Saturday.
We invited boys.
Told them to wear camo, bring guns & we'd feed them pizza.

First class plastic bag wrap job :)

Sometimes I wonder the dynamics of being the little brother & having older brothers 6 & 7 years older than you .... he lives the part well. he  s l a y s  me, this kid.

Then they ran around the field like this till their bullets were gone & they were dead.
That and till the pizza was ready.

He has such a fabulous band of boys around him that he gets to call friends.
My heart bleeds gratefulness.

His actual birthday was a real life sort of day.
Good morning.
School.
Good night.

But we carved out some happy birthday time .... that obviously included guns.

We took the canal.
They took the orchard.
We met back at home.

Before the good night part of the day came, we found the red plate & the only candle worth burning and sang happy birthday.

10 things I love about Jack.

I love that he lives life all in
I love that he loves his dad
I love that he sleeps in collared shirts
I love that he could care less how hot or cold it is
I love that he has brothers
I love that he's good at math
I love that he melts when I rub his back
I love that he seeks and demands justice
I love that he listens to Jesus better than he listens to me
I love that he laughs at my jokes

Nine to ten has been a big year for him.
So much growing up.
So much learning.
So much moving forward.

He's this beautiful mix of little boy/big kid.
I'm so humbled to still have a front row seat in his life.
I love how these pictures go back & forth between both ... little boy/big kid without him realizing.

See ... he likes my jokes :)

He didn't think I was looking.
Then he realized I was.
And then he tried again.

We tried, I tried a bunch of different times to take pictures.
He asked last fall if he could wait to cut his hair till he turned 10.
I agreed.
Kind of forgetting that his hair doesn't stop growing & that he has more of it that Ben, Molly, Regan & Chad combined.

I wanted pictures before the barber shop.
It's been his look this last year.
Plus it's my favorite blue coat & striped shirt.

These pictures happened downtown with 18 minutes of light left in the day.
He's pointing out that Chad is doing something ....

He was done.
My picture limit had been reached.
It's fitting .... he's 'ruined' a good many group shots with this look.

Be a man, Jacky.
A man who loves Jesus most.
